About our value words
Our ethos, based on our shared value words, is very important to us and should be at the centre of all that the school does. We create a caring, nurturing environment in which children and adults can feel valued and can grow in spirituality as well as in their learning and success. Astrea Dearne staff and students value every member of our learning community; we warmly welcome and respect all parents, carers, visitors, governors and friends of The Dearne ALC as part of our fully inclusive environment.
There are many wise words and teachings about caring for others and being mindful of the needs and feelings of others.
This philosophy is universally accepted as a good moral code to live by and can be a positive principle that all those working at Astrea Dearne can aspire to. Students likewise should be encouraged to be mindful of this underpinning philosophy in their dealings with others.
So our shared value words of Respect, Determination, Courage, Dignity, Honesty, Trust, Inclusivity, Kindness, Enthusiasm and Ambition should be encouraged when dealing with others, so ensuring our special ethos is active not passive and Astrea Dearne’s special nature is self-evident.

Governors will act as advocates for every child in persuit of excellence for every young person at Astrea Dearne.
Governors have a clear vision for every child built on ambition and aspiration for every single student and the future they will move into.
Their core vision is that every Dearne student, no matter what their ability or circumstance, will be developed as an individual during their time at the school and so have the highest aspirations for their own future. The ethos created will ensure every young person is sufficiently successful, academically and personally, to go on to lead an ambitious future of their choice.
The ethos created will ensure that every child should leave as a ‘good person’, with a deep understanding of the importance of the Dearne ‘Value words’ as cornerstones to them living happy and fulfilling future lives. They will develop the knowledge, skills and resilience to be 21st Century ready, understanding that through their actions they can positively contribute to society and be driving forces for good. The Governors’ vision is that Astrea Dearne, a real community based school and a true community resource, will help develop young people who are proud to attend Astrea Dearne and are proud of their achievements.

EPDA – Excellence in Pupil Development Award
At Astrea Academy Dearne we strive to fulfil the potential of all pupils in a range of areas throughout their five years of study. Academic success is one of our priorities, but ensuring that our pupils have the necessary life skills to prepare them for life out of school in an ever evolving society is also a key priority. As a school we have successfully gained accreditation of a nationally recognised award: Excellence in Pupil Development Award from Award Place. We are delighted to have gained recognition for our successful learners who mature into responsible citizens and for their involvement in the local community such as in our transition programme working with the local area team.
The personal attributes we focussed on developing in our pupils through this award were:

WAS (Wellbeing Award for Schools)
At Astrea Academy Dearne we strive to build on our successful accreditation of the EPDA (Excellence in Pupil Development Award) by working towards the WAS (Wellbeing Award for Schools). The wellbeing and mental health of all staff and students is of great importance to us at Astrea Academy Dearne; we endeavour to provide a positive school culture, which requires a whole-school approach that is led from the top while involving all in the school community. We hope to gain recognition for our work in developing emotional wellbeing in school with attributes such as resilience, character building, relationships and self-esteem, etc. Understanding both developmental and mental health awareness is critical.
The WAS has eight objectives which focus on areas of evaluation, development and celebration of the work of schools in promoting and protecting emotional wellbeing and positive mental health. Each of these areas is further broken down into Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
Objective 1: The school is committed to promoting and protecting positive emotional wellbeing and mental health by achieving the Wellbeing Award for Schools.
Objective 2: The school has a clear vision and strategy for promoting and protecting emotional wellbeing and mental health, which is communicated to all involved with the school.
Objective 3: The school has a positive culture which regards emotional wellbeing and mental health as the responsibility of all.
Objective 4: The school actively promotes staff emotional wellbeing and mental health.
Objective 5: The school prioritises professional learning and staff development on emotional wellbeing and mental health.
Objective 6: The school understands the different types of emotional and mental health needs across the whole-school community and has systems in place to respond appropriately.
Objective 7: The school actively seeks the ongoing participation of the whole-school community in its approach to emotional wellbeing and mental health.
Objective 8: The school works in partnerships with other schools, agencies and available specialist services to support emotional wellbeing and mental health.
