Overview
At Astrea Academy Dearne, we understand that all scholars must be provided with an education that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. A key part of this relates to relationships, sex and health education which will aim to support scholars to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy.
Astrea Academy Dearne recognises that RHSE (Relationships, Health and Sex Education) must take into account all of our scholars’ needs; for example: gender, religion, sexual orientation, SEND, maturity, etc. We understand our responsibility to deliver a high-quality, age appropriate and evidence-based
Sex Education and Accessing Materials
Sex education is not taught at Astrea Academy Dearne until Year 9.
Parents and carers have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. Sex education is delivered in:
- Year 9 Spring 2 Intimate Relationships
- Year 10 Spring 1 Healthy Relationships
The lessons in which sex education are taught are clearly highlighted in this curriculum. All materials are available to view upon request and you are welcome to visit school to discuss this in more detail and ask any questions. We understand that this can be a sensitive topic but often a chance to talk through concerns can help to allay any worries you may have.
Lessons are delivered in a professional, inclusive and sensitive manner with the aim to educate scholars so they can make informed decisions and stay safe.
Right to Withdraw
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the non-statutory/non-science components of sex education within RSE up to and until 3 terms before the child turns 16. After this point, if the child wishes to receive sex education rather than being withdrawn, the school will arrange this.
Requests for withdrawal should be put in writing using the Appendix 3 form (found here).
A copy of withdrawal requests will be placed in the scholars’ educational record. The Principal will discuss the request with parents and take appropriate action.
Alternative work will be given to scholars who are withdrawn from sex education
If you wish to discuss any aspect of RSE or you would like to withdraw your child from sex education, you should contact Mr Calverley (Assistant Principal: Personal Development) – russell.calverley@asteadearne.org.
