Warm weather

We are due a period of warm weather next week. To ensure all scholars are comfortable in lessons, we would like to share the following information:

Uniform: For next week only, scholars do not have to wear their blazers as part of their school uniform. They can continue to wear their blazers if they wish to. This is the only change to uniform due to the weather.

Blazers will be expected to be worn again from Monday 1st July. We will be in touch next week if this uniform adjustment needs to be extended.

Water: Scholars may need to drink more water than usual during the hotter weather. Please ensure they are prepared for school by bringing a reusable water bottle in their bag. Scholars will be able to refill their bottles from the water fountains around the building during social times.

Year 7 Parents’ Evening

Year 7 Parents’ Evening will take place at school on Monday 24th June 2024, between 3.15pm and 6pm. To book appointments with your child’s teachers, please use the link to School Cloud here

If you have any questions regarding the Parents’ Evening, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Simon or Mrs Myers at school. Thank you for your continued support.

Safeguarding

What is Sextortion?

Financially motivated sexual extortion (often referred to in the media as ‘sextortion’)  is a form of blackmail that can force any individual into paying money to an offender who is threatening to share nude or semi-nude images of them. This can also include forcing them to provide further intimate content or agreeing to do something against their will. Typically perpetrated by organised crime groups operating outside of the UK, sextortion can target any individual regardless of their age or gender.

How can Sextortion Happen?

Sextortion incidents can happen through a variety of different ways which can often start by perpetrators masking themselves as other children or by hacking accounts and pretending to be children known by the individual. It can often involve perpetrators:

  • Targeting young people through social online sites
  • Moving conversations towards an end-to-end encrypted platform
  • Starting sexual conversations or sharing an initial nude image
  • Requesting and pressuring the child for images or videos
  • Blackmailing them for money or further intimate content with the threat of sharing images with family members or friends
  • Claiming they have hacked their accounts and have access to information, images and videos

Year 10 Mocks

Year 10 mocks are now upon us. Are you unsure how to support your child/young person? Is your child/young person worrying and you are unsure how to support?
Why not try our top tip this week to help with anxiety:
Square Breathing
Box Breathing ...
This technique is very useful to help calm your child and to help them focus on their breathing. Please let your child take a good 5-10 minutes to focus on this weeks top tip!
Why not help them create an account on the Kooth well-being support page? This allows your child to complete mindful activities and also has a support chat by NHS qualified well-being staff.
The link to create an account is: https://www.kooth.com/ This support service can be used and accessed up to the age of 25.
Mrs South has put together some exam stress packs for Year 10s. If you feel your child would benefit from one, please email her on sarah.south@astreadearne.org

Sparx Maths

SPARX completion rates are still good at Astrea Academy Dearne. The Maths department is really pleased with how our scholars are approaching their homework and we are sure it will lead to improved GCSE grades in the long term.  Well done to all scholars who completed their homework.

The department offers support for homework on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school so please use them to support you if needed.

The deadline for KS3 is 7am every Wednesday and the deadline for KS4 is 7am every Monday.  Failure to complete by these days results in the SPARX support club and a detention if this is not attended.

Please note that our school is a nut free zone. We have scholars and members of staff in school who have serious nut allergies. Please do not send scholars into school with any products which may contain nuts.

MCAS

As you are aware, we currently use ParentPay for our cashless payments in school. During the summer holiday, we will be moving over to MyChildAtSchool (MACS) payments. If you already have activated your MCAS account, there is no further action needed and any balance remaining on ParentPay will automatically transfer over. If you are yet to activate your MACS and need help in completing this, please contact info@astreadearne.org
