Athena Synergy

Athena Synergy

Building on the success of our award-winning alternative provision, Athena, we are pleased to introduce an expanded provision from September 2021.

Our bespoke provision caters for the needs of pupils who have a range of communication and interaction (C&I) needs such as Autism or Developmental Language Disorder – as well as individuals who are working significantly below age related expectations.

Athena Synergy has been designed specifically for pupils who would otherwise require specialist provision.

A group of 10 pupils will access a full suite, which comprises: one consistent classroom,

two break-out intervention rooms, a break-out intervention and therapy space and also a calm room. A small team of specialist staff will deliver the full, broad and balanced curriculum with a staff to pupil ratio of at least 1:4.

All pupils who attend our school, whether in the mainstream or alternative provision, are fully fledged pupils of Astrea Academy Dearne and we believe strongly in including them in all aspects of the school.

Athena pupils therefore wear the same uniform. However, we will always work with parents to agree reasonable adjustments, particularly for pupils with sensory needs. On Fridays, students will wear their PE kit for the full day, as this will be our active day.

Please see the separate information sheet with full details of the school uniform for September 2021.

The First Week

In order to support an extended transition to their new school, Athena Synergy pupils will have a ‘staggered start’ in the first weeks of term.

Wednesday 1st September to Friday 3rd September 2021 – Staff Preparation Days
During this week, school will be closed for Athena Synergy pupils.

Monday 6th September to Friday 10th September
We will be in contact with you to arrange ONE AFTERNOON for your child to visit
11:45am to 2:30pm (the day will begin with lunch at 11:45am).

If all goes well on the initial visit, we aim to start the timetable on the previous page from Monday 13th September onwards.

Transition Visits

Unfortunately, due to coronavirus restrictions, it has not been possible to offer the full transition experience that we would have liked this year.

[Note that the transition event on 14th July has had to be cancelled on the guidance of Barnsley Public Health Authority].

However, individual visits are welcomed, by arrangement. Please contact Mr Purdy at school (contact details on the reverse of this leaflet) to arrange a visit.

Break and Lunch Times

We recognise that every pupil has different preferences and needs, particularly during unstructured times. We therefore take a flexible approach to ensure that – wherever possible – pupils are supported to engage with their peers during these crucial opportunities for social development.

Pupils are supervised at all times during break and lunch, and able to either eat their lunch in the dining area on the ground floor or within the Athena Synergy area if needed.

They can then access outdoor spaces through the large side doors and enjoy the outdoor space at the side of the building.

One of our Athena pupils, running a Christmas pop-up shop in order to raise money for the local Cash for Kids charity. All of the items sold were crafted by pupils and the project contributed to their
Level 2 ASDAN Award of Personal Effectiveness qualification.
